Tafari Powis '09 keeps his planner full with student
organization documents and flight itineraries.
Powis' close
ties to his family have taken him to Jamaica,
Panama and Trinidad.
The public relations major from Brooklyn spent four years living in Jamaica with his father and visiting his
mother's family in Panama.
His farthest venture
brought him around the world to Australia,
where he was an intern for fashion designer Donna Karan. While he spent a short time
there -- a week and a half -- it left a lasting impression on him. "It was
different, the night life was beautiful."
This summer Powis plans to
spend some time in Florida before visiting Jamaica again, but a friend is trying to
convince him to go to Guyana.
With this trip coming up soon Powis has his sights on another far-off location,
"I would love to go to Paris,"
he said.
Here on the Oswego campus Powis keeps
himself engaged in all aspects of student organizations. For the 2007-08
academic year he was president of the Caribbean Student Association, director
of finance for the Black Student Union, the director of student affairs and the
executive director of African, Latino, Asian and Native American Student
Leadership Conference.
It was his love of
personal interaction that drew him to public relations, but his interest in meteorology
initially attracted him to campus.
He will be taking on fewer
tasks his senior year, but may join the Student Association Planning Board. He
intends to go to graduate school.
"I'm going to miss the friendly environment,
the sunset and a lot of faculty," Powis said. "I plan to enjoy my senior year
and make the best out of my time at Oswego."
