Incoming Students Produce Winning PSA for Alumna's Company
A pair of incoming Oswegonians and an alumna took part in a winning production for Erie Insurance's "Lookin' Out" program aimed at teen drivers.
The "Quit Clowning Around" public service announcement created in part by James Domachowske '13 and Matthew Kirkman '13 is no joke according to Lisa Tamilia '89, who spends part of her time working with Central New York high schools through Erie.
"It's pretty big. They went up against everyone else in the company," Tamilia said. Pennsylvania-based Erie Insurance has offices in 11 states and Washington, D.C. About 80 schools participated in the PSA project.
Domachowske and Kirkman scripted, filmed and edited the video along with four Christian Brothers Academy classmates. The winning PSA is getting regular air time on cable stations in Central New York.
"Lookin' Out" promotes safe driving habits for teens with safety courses and events that include a drunk driving simulator.
"I like getting involved with the community and the kids," said Tamilia, who has worked as direct sales manager with Erie and worked with schools as part of the program for the past five years..
A business major at Oswego, she interned for an insurance firm while a student before making it a career after graduation. Tamilia was happy to discover Domachowske and Kirkman's college plans.
"When they said they were going to go to Oswego I said, 'You're just going to have the best four years of your life,'" she said.
Domachowske's interest in media helped lure him to Oswego State, where he and Kirkman will begin taking classes this fall.
"I love the campus, it's just beautiful," Domachowske said. "And when I heard about the communications program there I was really impressed."
Tamilia keeps her campus connection tight by participating in the Alumni Sharing Knowledge, or ASK, program and served as a 2009 Reunion class volunteer.
"I like bringing youth into the industry and bringing awareness of what could be for job opportunities (in insurance)," she said.
