Several Oswego professors earned recognition and grant money this past academic year.

Dr. Alfred Frederick, a professor of curriculum and instruction was awarded the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship grant for the sixth time in his career. He will spend six weeks this fall as a Fulbright senior specialist in education at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin, a small African republic.

Since 1990, Frederick has received three traditional Fulbright awards and three senior specialist grants to teach, conduct research and consult in Benin and Brazil. He traveled to Benin in June and January to work with educators there in advance of his grant-funded trip this fall.

Several other faculty and staff members also won awards or earned recognition in their fields:

- Dr. Shashi Kanbur of SUNY Oswego's physics department used a $132,346 grant from the National Science Foundation to take a group of upstate physics and computer science students to Brazil this summer.

- Dr. Elizabeth Dunne Schmitt of the economics department and Dr. Barry Friedman of the marketing and management department were co-winners of the President's Award for Teaching Excellence for 2007-08. Donna Steiner of the English and creative writing department won the Provost's Award for part-time faculty.

- Dr. Brooks Gump of the psychology department earned the SUNY Oswego President's Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity and Research for 2007-08.

- Dr. Steven E. Abraham, a professor of marketing and management, received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities for his research bridging law and business.

- Dr. Rebecca Burch was named the winner of SUNY Oswego's 2008 President's Award for Excellence in Academic Advisement.
