The opening weeks of the winter athletics seasons saw successful starts for Oswego State teams, and in turn, four Laker student-athletes have earned recognition from the SUNY Athletic Conference.
Laker guard Tommy Downing '09 was named SUNYAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 16. Downing led the Lakers at both ends of the court and was named as the tournament's Most Valuable Player as Oswego State won the championship of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Downing scored 16 points in a 79-74 win over Hilbert in the semifinal game and also held Hilbert's leading scorer to 2-for-16 shooting from the field and just eight points in the game. Downing also had six rebounds and a blocked shot in the contest. In the championship game victory against RIT, Downing had seven rebounds, a blocked shot, and five steals while also scoring a team-high 21 points. Oswego State won the game 81-68 after being tied 43-43 at halftime. Downing scored 11 of his 21 points in the decisive second half.
For the weekend, Downing shot 12-for-19 from the floor including 6-for-11 from behind the 3-point line. He also made 7 of 8 free-throw attempts. The junior from Staten Island and graduate of Curtis High School is majoring in adolescence education at Oswego State.
Three Oswego State men's ice hockey players earned SUNYAC awards, as Ryan Scott '08 was named Goaltender of the Week Nov. 12, Peter Magagna '09 was named Player of the Week Nov. 19, and Joe Hall '11 was named Rookie of the Week Dec. 10.
Scott set the all-time Oswego State shutout mark Nov. 9, making 28 saves in a 5-0 Laker win at Geneseo. It was the seventh shutout of his career. Scott, a senior from Williamsville, played for the Abitibi Eskimos in junior hockey.
Magagna recorded five points in a weekend split, a 6-1 win over Cortland, and a 5-2 loss to nationally-ranked Hobart. Magagna had two goals and two assists in the 6-1 victory over the Red Dragons.
Left wing Joe Hall scored a goal and an assist in each contest as Oswego State picked up a pair of wins over Morrisville, recording four points on the weekend after tallying just one through his first nine games. Hall, a native of Schaumberg, Ill., played for the Wellington Dukes before attending Oswego State.
