SUNY Oswego will celebrate its 150th anniversary
next year and the committee planning festivities would like alumni to help out
by taking a survey.
The college’s yearlong sesquicentennial celebration will
begin in May 2011 and include special events tied to Founder’s Day, Commencement
and Reunion Weekend. Everything culminates April 13, 2012, the 70th anniversary of Oswego’s
conversion from normal school to degree-granting institution.
“We’re there to encourage and coordinate participation in
the sesquicentennial,” said Tim Nekritz
M ’05, associate director of public affairs and member of the steering
committee. “The more people involved in the planning, the better, because we
want every member of the campus community to feel a part of this celebration.”
Oswego graduates are a particularly important part of that campus community. Alumni have unique historical perspectives of the student experience as well as a great sense of school pride, Nekritz noted.
The Sesquicentennial Steering Committee, which includes
representation from staff, faculty, administration and students, is considering
many activities that will happen throughout the year.
Survey
takers will rank the importance of each idea and indicate their availability to
get involved where applicable. It’s a chance for the steering committee to
gauge interest in the events and the feasibility of producing them.
