Central New Yorkers will have a great chance to connect with Oswego this summer.
The Metro Center in Syracuse is offering one graduate course, free of charge, through the "Course-to-Connect" initiative. Any resident of Central New York with a bachelor's degree who has not taken a graduate course from SUNY Oswego is eligible.
These graduate students will be able to choose from any course being offered at the Metro Center during the summer of 2009. There are four summer sessions, each lasting three weeks.
"We have the potential to seriously impact the economic development efforts in the region by providing employers with a highly educated workforce," President Deborah F. Stanley said.
Graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher currently make up 24 percent of the city of Syracuse's population, according to the U.S. Census. The Course-to-Connect offer is extended to residents of Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Tomkins counties.
"The basic idea is simple: Take the intellectual capital available in Central New York's college-educated students, grow additional capital in this population through post-baccalaureate certificate or advanced degree programs, and turn it into a long-term economic development strategy for the region," President Stanley said.
The Course-to-Connect initiative was unveiled at the Metro Center's grand opening celebration Dec. 4. The Metro Center is a 12,000-square-foot extension of SUNY Oswego housed in the Atrium, 2 Clinton Square.
The list of classes being offered will be available in early February via MyOswego and the Division of Extended Learning. Registration for summer classes begins March 18.
