Solemn Anniversary
20 Years Ago, Two Perished in the Pan Am 103 Bombing

Lynne Hartunian '89 and Colleen Brunner '90

Twenty years ago this month, SUNY Oswego faculty, staff and students mourned the loss of two of our own in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Lynne Hartunian '89 and Colleen Brunner '90 were among the 258 passengers aboard the international flight when it went down Dec. 21, 1988, en route from London to New York. They were traveling home from a school-sponsored study-abroad trip to London.

Both were communication majors and members of Alpha Sigma Chi sorority. Brunner worked in the Admissions Office and Hartunian was a teaching assistant for the late Professor Emeritus I. David Glick.

Brunner and Hartunian will be remembered in the special intentions at Mass Dec. 21 at the Hall Newman Center.

The Oswego Alumni Association plans to observe the anniversary at Reunion 2009, June 5 to 7, which would have been Brunner and Hartunian's 20th Reunion. The spring edition of Oswego alumni magazine will feature a remembrance as well.

The campus has honored the lives of Brunner and Hartunian before. The Class of 1989 senior class gift was dedicated to their memory.

In 1993, Oswego installed a memorial dedicated to the two women in the lobby of Penfield Library. Theatre Professor Emeritus William Stark '68 designed the display, which includes a copper-and-brass sculpture by Professor Emeritus Vincent D'Ambrosio symbolizing the earth and a photo of Brunner and Hartunian abroad.

In February 1999, the 10th anniversary of the tragedy was marked by a memorial service at the Hall Newman Center.

The Colleen Brunner Memorial Scholarship was established by her family and friends to assist students with financial need to participate in the college's Study Abroad program.

Also honoring a Pan Am 103 victim is another Oswego scholarship. Peter McCarthy '82 established the Daniel McCarthy Scholarship in honor of his brother Daniel, who was lost in the Pan-Am Flight 103 disaster. Daniel was not an Oswego student.
