The Entergy Charitable Foundation has recently granted a third year of funding, $25,000 per year, to SUNY Oswego to support the Project SMART—Science and Math Applied Resources for Teaching— “Kids at Work” program.

Project SMART is a 20-year K-16 professional development initiative that involves college community personnel with area teachers to develop hands-on, inquiry-oriented, equity-based teaching connected to the real world.

Project Coordinator Sue Witmer ’02 has engaged a team of teachers from Oswego and Onondaga counties to work on this project. Over the past two years, this dynamic group of educators has worked to integrate math, science and technology themes and activities like rocket launches, field excursions, wind energy, forensics, simple machines, alternate energy sources, global positioning systems (GPS), geo caching and problem solving into the classroom for hundreds of area school children.

New Haven Elementary School teacher Karen Griffin ’79, M ’83 took a class of beginning scientists to SUNY Oswego’s Rice Creek Field Station April 20 for some springtime exploration.

With another year of funding, the “Kids at Work” program will participate in SUNY Oswego’s Project SMART Summer Institute, which will include up to 100 contributing teachers and guests from across New York state.

In an effort to demonstrate its commitment to raising community awareness of the need for math, science and technology advancement in area schools, the Entergy team will be reaching out to pre-service teachers on the SUNY campus during the 2007-2008 academic year in addition to working on new and continuing projects.

Entergy Corp., a $9 billion company, is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States delivering electricity to 2.6 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
