Gov. Eliot Spitzer recently appointed Timothy
Gilchrist ’79 as deputy secretary of transportation
for economic development and infrastructure. In his
new position, Gilchrist will oversee the economic development,
infrastructure and transportation agencies and authorities
in New York state.
Gilchrist has worked for the New York State Department
of Transportation for more than 25 years, filling several
positions, including chief of transportation strategy.
In that role Gilchrist provided leadership for state
transportation policies, plans, and strategies. He also
supervised financial planning efforts for the department,
including all allocation of resources to regional offices
and the management of public transportation operations
and finances.
Gilchrist has also held the title of director of downstate
transportation strategy. Prior to that he was the director
of planning and strategy, where he served as the department’s
lead executive on border issues and was responsible
for working with the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.,
Port Authority and MTA on transportation plans for the
redevelopment of Lower Manhattan.
“Tim’s extensive policy background in transportation
infrastructure makes him an excellent choice for this
pivotal role,” said Spitzer. “He thoroughly
understands the state’s infrastructure network,
its specific challenges and the investments that must
be made to support future economic development.”
At the Department of Transportation, Gilchrist also
acted as the director of the passenger transportation
division, director of the transit division, assistant
to the commissioner and director of the transportation
budgeting bureau.
Gilchrist received his master’s degree from Harvard
University.
