for the NCAA Tournament. |
The Oswego State wrestling team had two wrestlers qualify
for the NCAA Tournament via wild-card selection, following
the completion of the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference
Championships. The tournament was held Feb. 17 at Ithaca
College.
Jake Taylor ’07
finished second in the heavyweight class, and Derrick
Smith ’09 was third in the 141-pound weight
class. Both were wild-card picks for the NCAAs and will
compete in the NCAA Division III Championships March
2 and 3 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Taylor was the top-seeded heavyweight and pinned Micah
Vore of RIT in the semifinals in 5:56. In the finals,
Taylor lost an 11-2 decision to Trevor Hiffa of Oneonta.
Smith was seeded second at 141 pounds and won his semifinal
by a 5-0 decision over Willie Horwath of Ithaca. In
the finals, Smith lost a 6-4 overtime decision to Paul
LeBlanc of Cortland. Smith then lost a true second match
10-4 against Luke Baum of RIT. Both Baum and Smith earned
wild card spots in the NCAA Tournament.
