Winning Season Leads to Individual Recognition for Baseball Team

Second baseman Brett Shaffer ’08 was named to the 2007 Rawlings Gold Glove Team for the New York Region in Division III baseball.

The Oswego State baseball team finished the season with a winning record against a very strong schedule and a return to the postseason. In turn, three individuals were recognized with all-region or all-conference honors.

Second baseman Brett Shaffer ’08 was named to the 2007 Rawlings Gold Glove Team for the New York Region in Division III baseball.

Shaffer fielded an outstanding .985 percent, making just two errors in 129 chances during the year. He was also a part of 19 double plays for the Lakers and started all 29 games at second base. At the plate, Shaffer batted .287 to rank fourth among Laker full-time players in batting average. He had four doubles and 17 RBIs.

A native of Caledonia and graduate of Caledonia-Mumford High School, Shaffer played at Finger Lakes Community College before enrolling at Oswego State.

Two Oswego State baseball players were named to the All-SUNYAC teams.

Nick Perioli ’08 was named a First Team All-SUNYAC outfielder.

Tom Farrell ’07, from Oswego, was named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team as a utility player.

Nick Perioli ’08, a native of Liverpool, was a First Team All-SUNYAC outfielder. Perioli batted .472 in SUNYAC games by going 17 for 36 at the plate with four doubles. He also drew five walks, scored eight runs, and drove in three while stealing five bases in five attempts. In the field, Perioli handled 21 attempts without an error.

Tom Farrell ’07, from Oswego, was named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team as a utility player. He played third base, shortstop and first base at different times for the Lakers and made just one error in 86 defensive chances in conference games. Farrell batted .259 by going 15 for 58 at the plate. He scored eight runs and drove in 10, with five doubles.

The Lakers finished the year with a 15-14 record and played in the ECAC Upstate Tournament. Oswego State played 11 games against teams that were nationally ranked or received votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll.

Outstanding Athletes

Ryan Woodward and Kelly Mraz
Ryan Woodward ’07 and Kelly Mraz ’07 were the 2007 recipients of the Oswego State athletics department Outstanding Senior Athlete Awards.

The Oswego State athletics department recognized 87 graduating varsity athletes at its third annual Senior Student-Athlete Honors Reception May 8 in the Sheldon Ballroom. Women’s basketball player Kelly Mraz ’07 was named Outstanding Female Senior Athlete and men's ice hockey player Ryan Woodward ’07 was the Outstanding Male Senior Athlete.

Mraz, a native of Johnstown, leaves Oswego State as one of the best players to play her sport in the program’s history. She was a four-time All-SUNYAC selection including twice being named to the all-conference first team as well as being SUNYAC Player of the Year and SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Mraz holds the all-time assists mark at Oswego State and was just the sixth player in program history to record at least 1,000 points. She ranks fourth in career scoring with 1,189 points and earned numerous all-region honors from coaches associations and publications.

Woodward, from Picton, Ontario, also has accomplished things never before achieved at Oswego State. He demonstrated leadership attributes in his very first season and went on to become SUNYAC Player of the Year and a Second Team East Region All-American following his junior year in 2006. As a senior he captained the Laker men's ice hockey team to the NCAA Division III Championship including scoring the game-winning goal in overtime of the national semifinals against St. Norbert.
