:::Reunion
Reflections:::
OAA BOARD PRESIDENT
REFLECTS ON REUNION 2006
I find myself beaming every time I come back to
Oswego.
Oswego is like a second home, a place where I
will always be welcome. I think I made as many
new friends at Reunion as I reconnected with old
friends. Oswegonians always seem to be willing
to reach out and include someone new into the
fun. My friends and colleagues in Philadelphia
(out-of-staters who wouldn’t necessarily
know Oswego’s reputation) know Oswego by
what I tell them, and I often say, “Oswego
is made up of good people. Good, meaning kind.
Good, meaning smart. Good, meaning interesting.”
This is a compelling combination that keeps me
intrigued. I read a few of my favorite books every
five years, knowing that while the text will be
the same, I’m a different person and...MORE

PRESIDENT STANLEY
NAMED WOMAN OF DISTINCTION
Deborah F. Stanley, who has served as the president
of SUNY Oswego since 1995, has been selected by
Senator Jim Wright ’71
as a 2006 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction.
“Deborah
has exhibited strong leadership as the president
of SUNY Oswego,” said Wright. “Under
her direction, the college has grown with new
facilities, technologies and programs. SUNY Oswego
is a better place because of her and I am pleased
that she has been selected for this honor.”
The Board of Trustees for the State University
of New York appointed Stanley as...MORE

MOUNTAINS
BEYOND MOUNTAINS
SUMMER READING SELECTION
Alumni are invited to join the rest of the Oswego
State community in reading Tracy Kidder's Mountains
Beyond Mountains, the story of doctor and
anthropologist Paul Farmer's quest to solve world
epidemics. The book is the Oswego Reading Initiative
selection for campus-wide perusal this summer
and discussion in the next academic year.
"In this excellent work, Pulitzer Prize winner
Kidder immerses himself in and beautifully explores
the rich drama that exists in the life of Dr.
Paul Farmer," Publishers Weekly wrote in
a starred review of the 2003 bestseller. "Throughout,
Kidder captures...MORE

REUNION 2006 A SUCCESS
It took an entire year to plan but in just three
short days, Reunion 2006 slipped away before we
knew it.
Reunion 2006 had a total participation of more
than 750 alumni and guests – 50 percent
higher than last year’s event. There were
59 classes represented at this year’s reunion,
from the class of 1936 to the class of 2007. Highest
class participation honors go to Class of 1956
with 16 percent.
Distance didn’t seem to be a problem for
Oswego alumni, who came from 26 states including...MORE

ALUMNI GET
TOGETHER AT REUNION 2006
An Oswego Reunion is all about connections —
with friends from years ago, with favorite faculty
members and with new acquaintances made during
the weekend.
Among the many connections made at Reunion 2006
June 9 to 11:
A Cup of Kindness
When Barbara St. Michel, associate director of
Campus Life, cleaned out a storeroom in Hewitt
Union several years ago, she found a fraternity
mug inscribed only with a first name — Jim
— and a date — 1956. She kept it in
her office for years until...MORE

ROBERT I. SWEET ’48
FUNDS HIGH-TECH CLASSROOM IN LANIGAN
A retired higher-education administrator, Robert
I. Sweet ’48 knows that a good education
provides a broader perspective of the world for
students. “You look at people a little differently
than in a narrow situation,” he says. That’s
why he made Oswego the beneficiary of his charitable
remainder trust.
Oswego provided Sweet with that perspective and
he has happy memories of his time on the lakeside
campus.
Now he wants to help students get the type of
education he got at Oswego — “which
is fantastic,” he says. “Not just
in a particular specialty, but an overall general
education on...MORE
