Pete Sears ’71 |
Oswego State men's ice hockey head coach Ed
Gosek ’83, M ’01
and assistant coach Pete Sears
’71 received mentions on national television
June 19 when the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley
Cup.
Oswego native Erik Cole is a player for the Hurricanes,
and NBC analyst John Davidson mentioned four of Cole's
youth hockey coaches from Oswego.
Gosek was Erik's coach at the peewee level in the Oswego
Minor Hockey Association and Sears was the head coach
when Erik played for the Oswego High School Buccaneers.
NBC's
NHL coverage includes a video clip that features
Davidson's reference to Gosek and Sears. The clip is
titled "Canes Celebrate" and is located on
the right side of the page below an advertisement. The
reference to the Oswego coaches comes between 1:35 and
2:05 on the video.
The NBC coverage led to a bit more fame for the two
Oswego alumni coaches.
"He's a class act," Gosek said of Cole in
a Syracuse
Post Standard article by Lindsay Kramer. "
He could've thanked 1,000 people."
Sears concurred. "Erik is the kind of kid who has
never forgotten his roots," Kramer quotes him as
saying.

Ed Gosek ’83, M ’01 |
News 10 Now reporter Megan Driscoll talked with Gosek
and Sears in a report
about Cole's impact on the Oswego community and his
library fund-raising efforts. Sears talked about Cole’s
perseverance in attaining his goals. Gosek told Driscoll
that the Stanley Cup champ is “a great role model
for the kids in the community, not only with his hockey
ability, but with what he brings back to our community." |
