STUDENTS HELPING
HONE LAKE-EFFECT SNOW FORECASTING
A $10,000 grant is paying SUNY Oswego meteorology
students to help the National Weather Service
better forecast and understand lake-effect snowstorms.
Given the unpredictable nature of lake-effect
storms and the crippling effect they can have
on Upstate New York communities, this work is
of great interest in the professional field and
an outstanding educational opportunity, said SUNY
Oswego Professor Robert Ballentine, the lead project
investigator.
Working with the Buffalo office of the National
Weather Service, students study different configurations
of the weather researching and forecasting modeling
system — which, while state-of-the-art and...MORE

VARHUS LEAVES
OSWEGO FOR NAZARETH
The line of well wishers stretched out the door
of the ballroom and through the lobby of historic
Sheldon Hall Dec. 15, as the campus community
said farewell to a longtime member.
Sara Varhus, dean of arts and sciences, has resigned
her position to take a new role as vice president
for academic affairs at Nazareth College in Rochester.
It was mid-summer 1977 when Varhus, fresh out
of the doctoral program at University of Rochester,
sat in that same Sheldon Hall as English Department
Chair Bill Drake interviewed her for a temporary
instructor position. “I thought I was going
to be here for one year,” Varhus said with
a laugh.
Twenty-nine years later, and after a career in
which she served as...MORE

MCDERMOTT RECOGNIZED
FOR WRITING ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS IN 2006
Oswego graduate Alice McDermott
’75 was recognized in December for
her new book, After This,
which was named by Washington
Post Book World as one of the 10 best books
in 2006.
“Richly textured, intricately woven…A
work not only of, but about, the imagination—an
imagination that works through oblique reference
and pattern and symbolism as much as through observed
detail,” said Margaret Atwood in The
New York Review of Books.
The book, published in September, is a vivid portrait
of an American family caught at the crossroads
of the tumultuous middle decades of the 20th century.
Witty, compassionate, and...MORE

ZOOLOGY DEGREE
LANDS ALUMNA WITH EXOTIC, WILD ANIMALS AT ZOO
When Tammy Sugrue ’00
graduated from Oswego State with a zoology degree
she knew it was her calling in life. An animal
lover at heart, it didn’t take her long
to realize that a job behind a desk cooped up
in an office all day just wasn’t for her.
However, working at a zoo with exotic animals
was.
For the last six years Sugrue has been an elephant
keeper at the Buffalo Zoo in upstate New York.
Her time there began as a student intern learning
to clean up after, feed and bathe the elephants.
Today, she not only makes sure that her three
female “friends” - Buki, 49, Surapa,
22, and Jyothi, 23 - are fed and cared for properly,
she also trains them for public viewings.
Buki, a wild elephant from Sri Lanka, was a circus
act for 25 years before arriving at the zoo in
1984. Surapa and Jyothi (Jodi for short) were
taken from a logging camp in Madras, India, before...MORE

and Brian Phares ’07,
along with faculty mentor Brad Korbesmeyer, completed
a month-long workshop with some of the residents
of the Springside independent retirement community
at Seneca Hill, located about five minutes south
of Oswego.
The residents spent the time writing monologues,
with the student mentors editing their work and
helping them progress as writers.
The participating residents, May Hale, Jan Brown,
Robert Wood, Bob Canfield, Marion Motis, Alison

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM
OFF TO BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY
The Laker men's ice hockey team has taken a liking
to its new surroundings at the Campus Center Ice
Arena and is off to the best start in program
history. Oswego State won its first eight games,
the longest winning streak to start a season,
and the Lakers' current overall record of 13-0-3
is the longest unbeaten streak to start a season.
Oswego State is ranked second nationally in the
USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, matching its
highest ranking in that poll. The Lakers trail
only Manhattanville (9-0-2) in the national rankings.
The Lakers also stand atop the SUNY Athletic Conference
at midseason with a 5-0-2 mark in league play.
With the team's success has come individual recognition

TWO MAJOR MILESTONES
REACHED IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL VICTORY
Oswego State's women's basketball victory at Utica
Dec. 7 improved the Lakers' overall record to
6-2. It was also a quality win on the road against
a Pioneers team that had just one loss up to that
point.
But for head coach Michelle Collins and guard
Kelly Mraz ’07,
the game will be remembered for different reasons.
The 66-51 win at Utica was the 100th career coaching
win for Michelle Collins, all of which were attained
at Oswego State. Also, with a game-high 21 points
in the contest, Mraz became the sixth player in
the program's history to record 1,000 points in
her career.
Collins has turned the Laker women's basketball
program into an annual contender for SUNYAC Championships
and NCAA Tournament bids. She inherited an...MORE
