STUDY: COLLEGE HAS $261.7 MILLION CNY ECONOMIC IMPACT
Oswego Alumni
A newly updated study shows that SUNY Oswego had an economic impact of $261.7 million last year on the seven-county Central New York region and injected $137.3 million into the Oswego County economy last year.

Prospering Together: 2005-06 goes beyond dollars to detail many of the effects the college has on the neighboring area in terms of economic development, educational and civic support, and cultural enrichment.

“There is no easy or shorthand way of assessing the impact of an institution of higher learning,” SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley said. “This document gives an indication of how inextricably our college is woven into the fabric of the community, engendering benefits that touch all its citizens.”

The economic impact study noted that the campus had...MORE

APPLICATIONS TO OSWEGO FLOOD IN AS QUALITY RISES
Applications to SUNY Oswego for next fall have been consistently ahead of last year — up 15 percent according to the most recent report from the State University system’s processing center.

The increase in applications this year comes after “a very good year last year,” said Joseph Grant Jr., vice president for student affairs and enrollment. For fall 2006, freshman applications were up about 10 percent, resulting in about six applicants for every available opening in the freshman class.

“Now it looks like we may be up that amount again,” Grant said. “We may be pushing seven applications for every opening, which would be good. We’re already denying people that...MORE

OSWEGO’S SHORT STUDY-ABROAD COURSES SEE ENROLLMENT SURGE
Against a backdrop of increasing globalization, student enrollment in SUNY Oswego’s study-abroad quarter courses jumped nearly 50 percent this spring.

The number of students taking the courses, which feature seven weeks of classroom study and a week abroad, rose from 71 last year to 105 this spring, said Joshua McKeown, director of study-abroad programs for the college’s Office of International Education and Programs.

Research shows that travel, opportunities for adventure, and learning about other cultures are among the experiences most desired by students, McKeown explained.

“We’re hoping the combination of educational content on campus with...MORE

WORLD COMMUNITY LOOKS TO PROVIDE GLOBAL WELCOME
A new group is working to make sure the college’s international community feels more at home.

Called the World Community, the informal group gives international faculty, staff and students — and anyone with an interest in other countries — opportunities to interact and feel welcome, said Gurdeep Skolnik, assistant director of continuing education at SUNY Oswego.

“Over the years that I have been here, I have noticed that there is a sizable number of international faculty and staff as well as colleagues who have an international interest,” said Skolnik, who spearheads the group.

“I’ve noticed people from one country may not even be aware that...MORE
