Alumnus, Heart Research Hero Gains SUNY Recognition

Ban An Khaw '69

Pioneering heart disease researcher Dr. Ban-An Khaw '69 will receive an honorary doctorate of science from the State University of New York at this year's Commencement May 16.

He is expected to appear at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ceremony at 1 p.m. in the Campus Center arena and convocation hall.

Khaw is at the cutting edge of medical research in search of swift and accurate diagnoses for such health issues as breast cancer and heart disease. He is the George Behrakis Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston.

Khaw has spent more than 30 years teaching at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees from Boston College.

He is internationally recognized in the field of cardiovascular imaging and new technology development, and collaborates with researchers around the world. He has lectured extensively nationwide and internationally, including the Netherlands, Italy, India, China and Germany. He was instrumental in the formation of biotechnology companies Molecular Targeting Technologies Inc. and Biospecifics Inc. and most recently created a company called Akrivis Technologies LLC to benefit society with some of his latest discoveries.

The Burma native patented his "cellular Band-Aid," which uses fat globules to patch damage in the wall of the heart muscle cells, in 1998. Today, he invites Oswego students to visit his Northeastern University laboratory.

The author of more than 200 academic papers and hundreds of lectures, Khaw is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Nuclear Cardiology.

A biology undergraduate at Oswego, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Oswego Alumni Association's highest honor, in 2002. Most recently, he came to Oswego in October 2007 to make a presentation on molecular imaging in cardiovascular diseases at the Science Today lecture series.
