March Madness: Hockey, Basketball Make Playoff Progress
The men’s basketball and women’s ice hockey teams look forward to more postseason play tonight and Saturday after historic wins last weekend. Men’s hockey is also in action Saturday, playing Plattsburgh for the SUNY Athletic Conference title.
Tonight's men's basketball game will be streamed live at 7 p.m. Should they advance, Saturday's 6:30 p.m. contest will be webcast as well.
Men's hockey competes in the SUNYAC final, which is also set to be streamed live Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The women's ice hockey Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal will be streamed Saturday at 5 p.m. with the winner of that contest playing 2 p.m. Sunday.
Nearly 50 years after it last topped the conference, the Oswego State men's basketball team can call itself SUNYAC champions once again.
The No. 14 Lakers (25-3) capped off a perfect regular season conference schedule and a 3-0 tournament run with a thrilling 66-57 win over second-seeded Cortland (21-7) Feb. 25 at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
The program’s fifth conference title ⎯ the first since back-to-back runs in 1964 and ’65 ⎯ clinched the Lakers their second straight and second-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships. Oswego State will host rounds one and two of the NCAAs tonight and tomorrow, March 3.
The Oswego State women's ice hockey team (11-13-2) also posted a historic win Feb. 25, earning the program's first-ever playoff victory against Neumann University in a 3-0 shutout at the Campus Center Arena.
The Lakers will face Plattsburgh in the ECAC West Semifinal round tomorrow, March 3, at a time to be determined in Rochester.
Finally, the top-ranked Oswego State men’s hockey team hopes to earn the SUNYAC conference title tomorrow, March 3, against rival Plattsburgh at the Campus Center Arena.
The team made sure that last year's semifinal loss did not repeat itself, as the Lakers scored six straight goals in the first and second periods en route to an 8-3 win over Fredonia (12-11-3) Feb. 25.
