Cutting-edge Video Tech Coming to Oswego
Imagine taking a class or attending a presentation where the audience is interacting with a speaker who is hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
That's just one of the features of the video conferencing system SUNY Oswego will begin using this fall.
High-tech video conferencing is just a small part of a the three-year, $3.5 million initiative intended to modernize campus telecommunication infrastructure, said Joseph Moreau, chief technology officer for Campus Technology Services.
Moreau said the communication initiative came to fruition when planning for construction of the new science complex was just getting under way. College officials realized there was a significant amount of obsolete infrastructure running underground directly in the path of the proposed construction site.
The new system combines both phone and data lines that used to run independently. The upgrade allows Verizon to install video conferencing units - one each in the Syracuse Metro Center and Campus Center on the main campus.
The Cisco TelePresence technology uses high-definition video and high-quality audio with roughly life-size images.
"It really feels like someone is in the room talking to you," Moreau said.
The video conferencing technology will offer greater curriculum opportunities for graduate students, Moreau said. With the new system, professors can teach a class at the Metro Center and offer the course to students on campus simultaneously.
"The more we can reduce the travel time ... [that's a] carbon footprint we're not contributing to the environment," Moreau said.
One of the most exciting aspects of the new technology is the ability to accommodate guest speakers, alumni and visiting professors from around the world, Moreau said.
"They just aren't going to fly here ... but they would be willing to share their experience via teleconference," Moreau said. "It's going to help us be a global player in education."
