Winter Sport Seasons Heat Up as Postseason Nears
The winter weather continues at Oswego, but there is one area of campus that is heating up despite the high snow and low temperatures: athletics.
February is an extremely busy time for athletic departments around the country as teams look to qualify for post-season competition, but the playoff bug seems to have bit Oswego State hard this year.
The Laker men's ice hockey team is a unanimous No. 1 selection in the most recent USCHO.com Division III poll with an overall record of 19-2-0 and an unblemished conference record of 12-0-0 with four league games remaining. With a win on Friday night against Cortland, Oswego State and head coach Ed Gosek '83, M '01 will clinch the top-seed in the SUNY Athletic Conference playoffs and host a semifinal game 7 p.m. Feb. 26.
The Oswego State women's ice hockey team is sweating out a tight Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference West post-season race. The Lakers are in fifth place with a record of 5-6-3 and four games remaining.
Oswego, which has already set a program-record of wins in a season with nine, is fighting for the chance to host its first-ever playoff contest along with Neumann and Utica. The ECAC West playoffs are slated to begin Feb. 26.
On the hardwood, the Laker men's basketball team sits atop the SUNYAC standings with a record of 10-1 and an overall record of 14-3, and is receiving votes in the most recent D3Hoops.com Poll.
There are seven games remaining in the conference schedule, but the team holds a three-game lead over third place and will fight with Plattsburgh the rest of the way for the top-seed in the league playoffs. The Lakers have put themselves in position to host a quarterfinal contest Feb. 22.
The women's basketball team is in sixth place in the conference standings with a record of 4-7 and 7-11 overall. The Lakers are four games back of fourth place and one game back of fifth place with seven games to play, as they look to contend for a quarterfinal appearance Feb. 22.

Wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field will be competing in their conference championships in the upcoming weeks as well.
The Oswego State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete at the SUNYAC Championships on Feb. 10 to 12.
The Laker grapplers will compete at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Championships Feb. 26, while the men's and women's indoor track and field teams will participate in the SUNYAC Championships on the same day. Each squad also has individuals who look to qualify for the NCAA Championships in their respective sports.
