SUNY Oswego to Offer Literacy Coaching Programs for Educators
SUNY Oswego plans to offer educators an opportunity to help develop their school districts' approaches to literacy education, with a four-day Literacy Coaching Institute in August, following up the next week with a two-day Advanced Literacy Coaching Institute.
Both institutes are scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the SUNY Oswego Phoenix Center: The Literacy Coaching Institute will be Aug. 8 to 11, and the Advanced Literacy Coaching Institute will be Aug. 15 and 16.
"Because students are inspired by their teachers to do well academically, it's imperative for school districts to provide continuing education for new and seasoned teachers," said Yvonne Petrella, dean of Extended Learning. "Our program will train and inspire teachers, and provide a great benefit to their students as well as their peers as they return to their districts and are able to share what they've learned."
At the Literacy Coaching Institute, literacy coach Jill Parker '94, M '98 plans to help participants take a critical look at their districts' literacy programs and learn skills to work with their fellow teachers to improve instruction practices. Participants also learn to better observe and provide constructive feedback to teachers.
During the Advanced Literacy Coaching Institute, Parker plans to focus on methods that can be used to strengthen relations with administrators and teachers as well as to gauge current success levels and make a plan to further improve.
"The future of our children depends largely upon their ability to read and write effectively," Petrella said. "When people lack these skills, they have a difficult time finding and keeping a job, which affects their own life, their family and their community. Despite budget cuts, school districts need to be diligent about maintaining and improving their literacy programs."
