Sesquicentennial Unfolding in Cyberspace
The celebration of the institution founded by Edward Austin Sheldon 150 years ago is unfolding in a very 21st-century way via the Web and social media.
The college's Sesquicentennial website is up and running with a variety of features on campus history, upcoming events and an evolving list of stories about its buildings (some written by English major Kathleen Davis '11).
One prominent Sesquicentennial site feature is an interactive photo timeline where users can view images and read more about news and events spanning the institution's history. New photos continue to be added to the developing visual timeline, powered by the Web tool Dipity.
A weekly Then and Now feature is sent to members of the campus community, alumni, emeriti and leaders around the state. Then and Now consists of two teaser images - a "Then" archival picture, often from Penfield Library's Special Collections, and a "Now" photo of a current campus feature or event - asking what they have in common, and a link to the reveal on the Sesquicentennial site.
Look for the link for Then and Now on the right hand column of each Lake E-ffect email, typically sent first Friday of each month. Stand-alone Then and Now emails will appear in alumni inboxes on other Fridays.
Then and Now teasers also appear on the official SUNY Oswego Facebook page and Twitter feed. Also in social media, the Oswego Alumni Association's Sesquicentennial Reunion Celebration, June 10 to 12, will publicize events and invite participation via Oswego 150 Reunion Facebook page.
The Oswego Alumni Association also has launched Flat Founder, a project inviting alumni, friends and members of the current campus community to post pictures of themselves on campus, cross country or around the world with a printed version of the iconic Sheldon statue. The Flat Founder site features an interactive map where viewers can see the latest places people have posted images.
A random drawing will award one Flat Founder participant with a $150 gift certificate to the College Store.
