Stuart Robinson is the head coach of the men’s soccer program
at SUNY New Paltz. Robinson has coached 32 All-State University of
New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selections since he took over
the program 14 years ago. The most recent selection was midfielder
Jason Irish (Newburgh, NY) who grabbed First Team recognition for
his play over the 2005 season. The Hawks won three of their final
five games to close out the season and finished the year 7-12 overall
and 1-8 in SUNYAC play.
In 1996 he became the first coach in the storied history of the program
to be named SUNYAC Coach of the Year, posting a 9-9-1 record. The
following season, Robinson directed the Hawks to their first post-season
appearance in 10 years as SUNY New Paltz qualified for the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament. In 2003,
Robinson guided the Hawks to their first SUNYAC Tournament since 1987
and helped senior Mario Lavacca become the first men’s soccer
player in the history of the program to be honored as the SUNYAC Player
of the Year. Robinson earned his second SUNYAC coach of the year accolade
in 2004 when he directed his team to a 6-3 conference record and a
third place finish in the SUNYAC. Prior to his arrival at SUNY New
Paltz, Robinson spent seven years as the assistant men’s soccer
coach at Vassar College in nearby Poughkeepsie, NY.
Along with his soccer duties, Robinson has served as the director
of athletics at SUNY New Paltz for seven years. In that role, he oversees
a department of 44 employees and 14 varsity sports. Under his direction,
SUNY New Paltz opened a 25-million dollar, 57,000 square foot athletic
and wellness center in March of 2006.
Robinson has served on the NCAA Appeals Committee, Soccer Rules Committee,
and is currently the Chair of both the NCAA Division III and the General
NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. He has been an adjunct
professor of English at SUNY New Paltz and this semester is teaching
Sport Law in the School of Business.
Robinson is a 1983 graduate of Williams College and earned his master’s
degree from Middlebury College in 1989. |
