AULETTA
has written “Annals of Communication”for The New Yorkersince
1992. He is the author of ten books, four of them national bestsellers.
His most recent books are Backstory: Inside the Business of Newsand
Media Man, a biography of Ted Turner, the subject of Auletta’s
2001 National Magazine Award for best profile. In ranking him America’s
premier media critic, the Columbia Journalism Reviewconcluded, “No
other reporter has covered the new communications revolution as thoroughly
as has Auletta.” He has written for various newspapers and magazines
and appeared regularly as a television interviewer and analyst. He
started writing for The New Yorkerin 1977. Auletta was among the first
to popularize the so-called information superhighway with his February
1993 profile of Barry Diller’s search for something new. He
has profiled the leading figures and companies of the Information
Age, including Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, AOL Time Warner, John Malone,
Harvey Weinstein, and the New York Times. He grew up on Coney Island
and now lives in New York City with his wife and daughter. He graduated
with a B.S. from SUNY Oswego in 1963 and received an M.A. in political
science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs
at Syracuse University. The State University of New York awarded him
an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 1990, and in 1998, he gave anaddress
at the inauguration of Deborah F. Stanley as President of SUNY Oswego.
