Lauren Polak

Admissions Intern

Year: Junior
Major: Public Relations
Hometown: Liverpool, NY

1. Have you participated in any internships?
Yes I am an intern in the Admissions Office and for the Media Summit through the School of Communication, Media and the Arts.  My admissions internship I began the summer between my sophomore and junior years and that will continue until I graduate.  My Media Summit internship is a year long.

2. How has your internships enhanced your education?
Both of my internships have definitely enhanced my education.  My media summit internship goes along with my major (public relations) and it has definitely given me a good feel for what a public relations specialist actually does.  My admissions internship has also had a major impact on me.  Because of that internship I decided that I want to go to graduate school for higher education and student affairs so I can continue this line of work for my career.

3. What activities are you involved with at Oswego?
PRSSA, First Year Peer Advisor for freshmen Public Relations, Broadcasting and Journalism students, national sorority (Phi Sigma Sigma), Admissions Intern, Media Summit intern

4. Why did you choose Oswego?
I chose Oswego because it just felt like I truly belonged here.  My dad is an alum of Oswego and it's close to my hometown which also influenced me to go here.  The strength of my program was absolutely outstanding and I felt that programs at other schools just could not compare to Oswego's.  I was also very impressed with the alumni and how successful they have been since attending Oswego.  Everyone at Oswego is also very friendly and I could tell that the administration on campus truly wants the students here to succeed.  Lastly, I love being right on the water and watching the sunsets, and that's something that not everyone can say about their school.

5. What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major is definitely the professors that teach the courses.  They're fun and upbeat.  It never feels like you're going to class it's more like you're going to go and hang out with friends.

6. Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you?
The faculty has made a huge impact on me.  They've proven time and time again that they genuinely care about my success as a student here at Oswego and they opened my eyes to several different opportunities.  They not only want me to succeed here but in the future as well.  They are extremely supportive and knowledgable.

7. Who's your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professor would be Dr. Eichhorn in Communication Studies.  She's has a very unique teaching style.  She NEVER lectures.  You show up to class and she just starts talking about certain situations she's been in and applies them to the theories we have to learn.  She's funny, upbeat and extremely knowledgable in her field.

8. Describe your department atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn?
Everyone in the communications department is so much fun.  Classes are fun and exciting and all of the professors are so knowledgable.  It is abundantly clear that they love their jobs and they love working with the students.

9. What's the best thing about SUNY Oswego?
The best thing about Oswego are the opportunities that get presented to you.  Internships, jobs, clubs and other activities are immediately available to students their freshman year.  Everyone has the chance to go above and beyond here.

10. Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped prepare you for a career.
Oswego has given me so many opportunities that have helped to open my eyes to careers that I have never even considered before.  Because of my job in admissions I found out that's truly what I want to do for a career.  Also, the experience I have gained by working in the office is phenomenal and I feel that when I do go to apply for graduate school and jobs it will allow me to significantly stand out against other candidates.

11. What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before?
I've had countless memorable opportunities given to me because of this school.  Whether it was an internship experience, working with my peers,  or meeting with alumni is has all made a significant impact on me and they're opportunities I never dreamed of having.
