Rachel Newport

Tour Guide

Year: Senior
Major: Broadcasting & Mass Communication and Business Administration
Hometown: Scotia, NY

1. Have you participated in any internships or overseas study programs?
Yes I have participated in a gls program in London, England my sophomore year during spring break. I plan to do another GLS program this year in order to experience more of the world. I’ve also had internships Albany Broadcasting in the promotions department and interned at the Times Union newspaper in Albany. On campus I was an intern for the Media Summit.

2. How has your internships or study abroad experience enhanced your education?
It was a great opportunity to see my major in a different way. Since we got to travel to the BBC and see how broadcasting changes from one place to another. My internship really helped me gage my different interests and see what I might do when I graduate. It also helped my resume because I was able to become paid after my internships. Also, it gives you an appreciation for what current people in the industry are doing and really helps you learn from the professionals. My favorite part is of course networking because a major in broadcast is truly about who you know.

3. What activities are you involved with at Oswego?
Tour guide, peer advisements, media summit intern, student representative for the committee on learning and teaching (C.O.L.T).

4. Why did you choose Oswego?
Oswego was the perfect size for me. Not too big, not too small, and being along the lake really helped. I heard they had a great broadcasting program here which is definitely true. Most freshmen can easily get their hands on radio, tv, or newspaper equipment as early as their first few weeks here, which is great. Plus, the cost won’t give me such a huge debt after my undergraduate work.

5. What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major is for broadcasting, the amount of clubs and activities dedicated to it like the tv station, radio, newspaper and how easy to is the learn the equipment. For business, I really enjoy that most of the professors have an abundance of real world experience and are able to teach using real world examples which really makes the material come alive.

6. Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you?
Faculty is extremely willing to help you if you want the help. In the broadcasting department, they have many opportunities for networking with guest speakers and are always reminding you of internship opportunities. Plus, they make effort to know your name and interests. In the business department, the faculty really helps make the material relatable using their real world experience.

7. Who's your favorite professor and why?
I can’t pick a favorite professor between two departments; all of them bring something new to the table.

8. Describe your departments atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn.
Both my departments have a very organized way of advising their freshmen to keep them on track all 4 years.

9. What's the best thing about SUNY Oswego?
The people, the professors and all the opportunities. Oh and of course, the lake.

10. Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped prepare you for a career.
The internships opportunities, and all the classes are really starting to come together senior year where you can see why certain classes you took even freshmen year really were important. For example, a public speaking class was a huge building block for all my upper division classes. I feel prepared after taking my senior cap stone that I can go out and really put my in class knowledge to the test. We have sales professionals critique our sale presentation which is conducted the way a real sale would take place.

11. What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before?
Going to London to get an international perspective on broadcasting was something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the chance. Also our media summit gave me the chance to mix and mingle and network with professionals in the field. Few colleges have that kind of an opportunity.
