Year: Junior Major: Accounting Hometown: Champlain, NY
Have you participated in any internships or overseas study programs? If yes, where and when? During my freshman year, I spent Spring Break in London through a course called GLS 100. The first half of the semester, I learned about London; the class ended with a trip to London visiting all of the gorgeous sites we learned about. I can’t wait to go bac
How has your internship or study abroad experience enhanced your education? I’ve been abroad several times, but GLS 100: London was an amazing experience. Visiting another country is always a great experience, but learning about everything and then seeing it was absolutely unforgettable. It is one class I’ll definitely remember for the rest of my life. I highly recommend taking one of the GLS 100 courses during your experience here!
What activities are you involved with at Oswego? A large portion of my time is spent in the Admissions Office convincing you to come to Oswego. Another large consumer of my time is my position as a Resident Assistant in Riggs Hall. The rest of my time is spent as a First-Year Peer Advisor for Computer Science and Software Engineering majors, a member of the Accounting Society, and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (international business honor society). Although all of these make my schedule extremely busy, I love every moment of it! I have a wide variety of knowledge throughout campus that I enjoy sharing with others.
Why did you choose Oswego? First and foremost, I adored my tour guide! He was great and not only sparked my interested in Oswego, but also inspired me to become a tour guide. Both the campus and its atmosphere are absolutely beautiful, open, and friendly. The Lake Ontario sunset is certainly a wonderful addition that can’t be experienced anywhere else!
What is the best thing about your major? I love Accounting! The business world has always intrigued me and Oswego has done an excellent job enhancing my love for it. The professors and students are great and easy to talk to.
Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you? The faculty is always available whenever you need them; they’re beyond eager to help their students. I’ve never had a professor turn me away or steer me in the wrong direction. They encourage me to do my best and to always ask for help. I have strong relationships with several of my professors, who are more than willing to write recommendation letters for me in the future. Some of them have actually become friends who I talk to on a regular basis.
Who’s your favorite professor and why? Professor Kirk of the Accounting Department is by far my favorite professor. All of my professors have been great, but I’ve learned the most from her. Her teaching style is fast-paced and requires self-motivation, much like the business world. The depth of Accounting knowledge that I have is largely due to her and her classes.
Describe your department’s atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn. The Accounting Department extends a huge helping hand to its students. There are countless student organizations in the School of Business in which Accounting students can get involved. Most of these organizations include important hands-on experience necessary for success in the business world.
What’s the best thing about SUNY Oswego? The people! I’ve met so many great people who have shaped me into the person I am today. My freshman year roommate, friends, faculty, co-workers, as well as so many others that I’ve met along the way have been absolutely amazing. All of these people have taught me so much about myself that I never expected to learn in college. I can’t express thanks to them enough.
Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped prepare you for a career. I quickly became involved in several organizations on campus and in the Admissions Office. Without the support of the terrific people around me, I would have never joined any of these organizations. I have escaped out of my shell that I was stuck in during high school because of the people in Oswego. As a result, I’ve become comfortable with unfamiliar situations and people—both of which are necessary for success in any career in the business world.
What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before? I never expected to have so many options for my college career. Oswego has given me the opportunity to develop as a strong person, student, and worker. From the moment I arrived on campus, I was able to be whoever I wanted to be rather than who people expected me to be. Since that instance, my life has been happier than ever before.
