Kelly - Admissions Tour Guide

Year: Sophomore
Major: Human Resource Management
Hometown: East Greenbush, NY

What activities are you involved in at Oswego?
I am involved in Del Sarte Dance Club, Phi Beta Lambda, a tour guide in the Office of Admissions and a Resident Mentor in Johnson Hall.

Why did you choose Oswego?
I chose Oswego because it has excellent programs, in particular the 5 year MBA program for accounting. This is one of the few colleges that offer all 5 years on one campus versus transferring. The location was also great, the picturesque sunset on Lake Ontario which is just a walk down the stairs from my residence hall. The size of the student population also had a large impact, there are enough people to always meet someone new, and however it is small enough to always see a familiar face no matter where you are.

What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major is the amount of resources available to guide students through the courses as well as through participation in clubs. Professors highly encourage a well rounded curriculum and participation in outside activities and have no problem helping students in any way.

Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you?
The Oswego faculty have challenged and inspired me to strive for success and have provided me with the necessary resources to gain and strengthen my skills.

Who's your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professor is Professor Naryan, he taught MAT208 (Business Calculus). The first day of class I was so nervous because I had never been in a class with 120 people, but he still took the time to get to know me and provide extra help so I could succeed. He was always so nice, friendly and approachable, which made me feel more at ease in an otherwise potentially difficult class.

Describe your department's atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn.
The Accounting Department is very business-like and has great resources. Many of the professors and faculty have worked in the business world for years before teaching at Oswego, which provides students with many different perspectives and knowledge of what is out there beyond college.

What's the best thing about SUNY Oswego?
The best thing about SUNY Oswego is the overall friendly feeling on campus. There are always smiling faces and students feel very comfortable with each other and are happy to help anyone they meet.  Oswego has everything to offer and more, from a wide range of academic studies to a variety of extracurricular activities, along with the positive atmosphere of campus, it is a very well rounded place to be.

Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped prepare you for a career.
The Oswego experience has helped me prepare for a career because the classes aren’t just about what is written in the text book. Professors discuss current issues in the real world and connect them to the content and material we are studying. I feel confident that upon graduating from Oswego, I will be prepared for whatever and wherever life brings me.

What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before?
Oswego has provided me with numerous opportunities, but one of the most important is networking opportunities. By becoming involved in so many activities and jobs across campus I have had the pleasure of meeting other students and faculty whom otherwise I may have never made a connection with.
