Year: Senior Major: Business Administration and Economics Hometown: Lancaster, NY
Have you participated in any internships or overseas study programs? If yes, where and when? I have been an intern in the Admissions Office from the Fall of 2008 to present.
How has your internship or study abroad experience enhanced your education? My
internship has enhanced my education by giving me on the job experience
that supplemented what I learned in the classroom as a business major.
This gives me an edge on the competition when applying for a career
after graduation.
What activities are you involved with at Oswego? I
am a Resident Mentor in Johnson Hall; the only all freshmen residence
hall on campus. I work part time in the Admissions Office as a tour
guide and intern. I am an active member in the ski and racquetball
clubs and will be a member of the bowling club this upcoming semester.
Why did you choose Oswego? What initially
drew my attention to Oswego was that I received a Presidential
Scholarship which covered the costs of my tuition. After researching
the school more I learned that the School of Business is AACSB
accredited which only about 14% of schools of business internationally
have.
What is the best thing about your major? Business
is such a broad major that there are so many opportunities after school
to begin a career. Someone can take the core skills they learned in The
School of Business and apply them to any company they may work for in
the future.
Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you? The
Oswego faculty has taken the “real world” experience they gained in
their given fields and shared that knowledge in the classroom with me.
They do not teach solely from a textbook but rather from the actual
experiences they have had.
Who’s your favorite professor and why? My
favorite professor would have to be Mary McGowan because she is very
down to Earth and knows how to communicate to college students. She is
very fluent in the material because she practices it professionally but
can also teach her class in a way that everyone can understand and
breaks the material down for us.
Describe your department's atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn. When
looking at colleges I decided to major in business. I learned that
Oswego’s School of Business was AACSB accredited which means that the
faculty in the program had meet a certain academic standard in which
only 14% of schools of business met internationally! Having been
accredited like this, I strongly believe I received a better education
as a result.
What’s the best thing about SUNY Oswego? The
best thing about Oswego is the college’s commitment to keeping class
sizes small. The average class has only 24 students. Oswego also
guarantees that at least one class your freshman year will have fewer
than 20 students in it. Smaller sizes give students easier access to
their professors during class as well as their office hours.
Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped prepare you for a career. Oswego
offers many leadership opportunities that will be beneficial especially
when preparing for a career. Personally, I have been a Resident Mentor
in Johnson hall for three years as well as an intern in the Admissions
Office for two of those years. Both of these jobs have put me in a
management position which is very applicable to major of Business
Administration.
What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before? Oswego
has given me the opportunity to take my first law class. I had never
taken one before but once I did, I realized I wanted to have a career
in it. As a Business Administration major I was required to take a
variety of classes, one of which was business law. Without having taken
that class I would never have discovered my interest in the field.
