Year: Sophomore Major: Biology Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
1. What activities are you involved with at Oswego? Resident Assistant in Funnelle Hall, Students for Global Change member and I'm a member of the Black Student Union.
2. Why did you choose Oswego? I chose Oswego because of its diverse academic offerings. Coming in as a freshman I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to major in, through the various major exploration workshops through the Compass I was able to find my bliss which is Biology. Also, the serene atmosphere and beauty of Oswego’s campus is what locked my decision to come here.
3. What is the best thing about your major? Biology allows me to explore and find answers to various questions. I enjoy the fact that science changes every second and there is always a new discovery in the scientific field. I also love the fact that Biology always keeps me on my toes where my mind is always processing new information. I am the type of person who loves to learn something new everyday and Biology has truly fulfilled my satisfaction to learn more.
4. Generally speaking, what impact has the Oswego faculty had on you? Oswego’s faculty has been extremely helpful whenever I had a question. In fact none of my questions have gone unanswered. From my professors, to my advisors, and other professional staff I have had confidence in their wisdom, and thus far they haven’t steered me in the wrong direction.
5. Who is your favorite professor and why? Geraldine Forbes has been my favorite Professor here at Oswego thus far. She was my Women in History instructor. Professor Forbes is such a brilliant and insightful woman. Everything she assigned in class had a purpose and class discussions were so interesting. Being in her class was an enjoyable experience and as a result I have become more knowledgeable of the impact women have had in society from the beginning of time.
6. Describe your department’s atmosphere and how it has enhanced your ability to learn. The professors in the Biology department come from very diverse and unique educational backgrounds. They in fact make up the eclectic learning environment of the department. In addition to that they have been involved in some sort of research. Therefore when you roam through the hallways outside of the offices of many of the professors, you will find loads of scientific discoveries posted on the bulletin boards. Whenever I see the many research findings this has propelled me to explore my options to conduct my own research while on campus.
7. What’s the best thing about SUNY Oswego? Oswego has become my second home. The best thing about being here is the fact that there are so many opportunities available for students. From internships to student organizations anyone can find their own niche.
8. Comment on how your Oswego experience has helped you prepare for a career. The Compass has really allowed me to explore my career goals. At the Compass I have been able to professionally prepare my resume, as well as find internships through the Experience Based Education database. Also, I have been able to connect with a Oswego Alum in the medical field through the Alumni Sharing Knowledge network; where this has allowed me to ask questions about how they’ve enjoyed their career and what are some of the things they’ve done throughout their college career which has helped them become successful.
9. What opportunities has Oswego given you that you never had before? Oswego has allowed me to explore my interests. Before coming to college I didn’t really take the time out to choose my classes based on my interests. Having the responsibility of choosing classes and what professor to take has been great in the sense that I am in control of my education. College is what you make of it, and here at Oswego I have been able to have access to programs that allow me to develop more as a person. I enjoy my major, and I know that throughout the rest of my academic career/ future endeavors I will have the support from the professional staff.
