Academic Competitiveness and National SMART Grants
 

 Academic Competitiveness Grants

The Academic Competitiveness Grant was made available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.                                                                                            
The maximum award is $750 for the first year of undergraduate student and up to $1300 for the second year of undergraduate study for full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who have successfully completed a rigorous high school program.  Second year students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 This grant is available only to U.S. citizens.

Disbursement:
By semester. May be used as a deferement if paperwork is complete.

File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Be sure to list Oswego State as one of the colleges authorized to receive the information. Oswego's code is 002848. 

National SMART Grant (Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent)

This grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate student to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical,life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also be enrolled in courses necessary to complete the degree program and maintain a GPA of at lest 3.0 in the coursework required for the major. The grant is only available to U.S. citizens.

Amount:
This grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study. The amount of the SMART Grant, when combined with a Pell Grant, may not exceed the student's cost of attendance.

Disbursement:
By semester. May be used as a deferment if paperwork  is complete.

TEACH Grant Program

Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year this program will provide grants of up to $4,000 per academic year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or better and must also sign a TEACH Grant Agreement including the conditions listed below.

Conditions: In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. You  must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant.  If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of the TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) were disbursed.

This grant will provide up to $4,000 per academic year.
