Transfer Scholarships

Transferring from your community college or other four-year institution to Oswego can be a challenging and difficult transition for you mentally, physically and emotionally. This transition can also be difficult financially. The Office of Transfer Services understands the difficulty that many transfer students face financially when transferring to a new institution and has tried to put together some resources to aid you in seeking out financial assistance.

Myrtle Waters Stewart Scholarship

Amount: $900 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Recipient: One

This scholarship was established by Janice Brinson '54 in memory of her mother, who passed away in 1992. It exists to assist an African-American female entering (freshman or transfer) Oswego State. Preference will be given to an education major. Demonstrated academic excellence and financial need comprise the major

criteria in the selection process for this award. Original application packet should include high school guidance or departmental letter of recommendation.

Renee Valles Toothman '85 and Michael L. Toothman Scholarship

Amount: $500 ........................................Recipient: One

This scholarship was established by Renee Valles Toothman '85 and Michael L. Toothman to support and encourage an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology. This scholarship can be renewed up to four years. To qualify a student must:

a. Initially be an incoming full-time freshman or transfer student.

b. Be enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, majoring in Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology

c. Demonstrate academic commitment and good citizenship

d. Demonstrate financial need.

Roberta Byer '71 Scholarship

Amount: $1,000. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Recipient: One

This scholarship was established by the estate of Hannah Byer as stipulated in her Last Will and Testament in memory of her daughter Roberta (d.1971). The estate directed the State University of New York at Oswego to put the monies where needed. The scholarship will be available for an entering freshman or a transfer student.

William S. Barnes '33 New Student Scholarship

This award will be presented to an entering student with an outstanding academic record. Criteria include high school or transfer college average, standardized test scores and leadership skills.

Roland and Dorothy Brown Clark '36 Merit Scholarship

Amount: $1,250. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Recipient: One

The late Dorothy Brown Clark '36 (d.1998), visionary past president of the Oswego Alumni Association, and her husband Roland (d.2000) bequeathed a generous sum to Oswego State to establish an endowed scholarship. To commemorate the Clarks' lifelong commitment to academic achievement and leadership, Oswego State will offer a Merit Scholarship to an incoming freshman or transfer student.

Lynn & Ellen Hemink Scholarship

Amount: $1,500. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Recipient: One

This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Hemink to be used as a recruitment mechanism for attracting academically qualified students to Oswego State. Demonstrated academic excellence, leadership abilities and extracurricular activities comprise the major criteria in the selection process for this award. This scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors (minimum 85 academic average) and/or transfer students (minimum 3.0 academic average) with no specific major required. Recipient must be a New York state resident.

Gerhard D. Zeller New Student Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Gerhard D. Zeller to honor his commitment to the Native American community. Qualified applicants will be of Native American descent. New and transfer students are eligible to receive this scholarship.

Louella & Harold Oakley Scholarship

Amount: $500 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Recipient: One

This scholarship was established by Naomi Oakley McCracken '70 and Douglas McCracken in memory of her parents to support and encourage an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Biology. The student must have a declared major in either Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Biology. This student must demonstrate academic commitment and good citizenship. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming full-time freshman or transfer student who meets the qualifications for a Merit Scholarship.

(Named in honor of the four Hutchinson Sisters '12,'13,'15 &'17)

Elsie Hutchinson Morris bequeathed the college a significant sum to establish a scholarship fund. Two recipients, one male and one female, will be selected from applicants (entering freshmen or transfer students) who have graduated from an Oswego County high school. Candidates must have a demonstrated need for financial aid.

Harold E. Morse '61 Family Scholarship

Morse '61 to provide Economic relief to a deserving student who has financial challenges that compromise his/her experiencing a full student and academic life. This award honors Hubert B. Smith, retired Assistant Provost and Director of the Office of Learning Support, for many years or service in the promotion of human diversity and academic excellence at Oswego State. The Smith Scholarship was created in 1996 by a campus-wide initiative formed to promote diversity on the Oswego Sate campus. This award is dedicated to providing financial support to bright and talented students and encouraging them to focus on both academics and participation in the college experience. Financial need may be taken into consideration; however, scholarships will be based on the academic performance of individuals who fulfill the following requirements:

  • A. Be nominated for the award by a faculty or staff member
  • B. Have earned a minimum of 27 credits at Oswego (sophomore or junior standing). Transfer students must have completed two semesters of study at Oswego
  • C. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • D. Demonstrate that he/she is a person of good character and integrity
  • E. Have a documented history of service to SUNY Oswego or the Oswego Community
  • F. Submit a 250-word essay demonstrating how he/she has contributed to human/cultural diversity of the campus and/or the Oswego community

Jack C. James '62 Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Jack C. James '62 in appreciation and recognition of the role Oswego plays in enabling non-traditional students to complete their education, gain postgraduate credentials or undergo career change. This award is intended in inspire students for academic achievement and subsequent leadership in the larger society, whether this is within the realm of academia, government, business or the military. To qualify for this award, a student must:

  • A. Be a non-traditional undergraduate or graduate student enrolled or enrolling in SUNY Oswego's School of Education full or part time. Secondary preference may be given to students enrolling or enrolled in SUNY Oswego's School of Business
  • B. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • C. Provide two letters from faculty, community leaders or employers that speak to the criteria for this award
  • D. Complete the application and essay in this publication demonstrating a financial need where this scholarship might be the difference in continuing with his or her education.

James E. Perdue Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established by Olive Brannan Spargo '31 (d.2004) in recognition of and appreciation for Oswego State and its dedicated and caring faculty. This scholarship is intended to inspire, encourage, and stimulate active participation in the life of the college. Demonstrated leadership and citizenship compromise the major criteria for the full-time enrollment at Oswego State. Qualified applicants will:

  • A. Be enrolled or accepted for full enrollment at Oswego State
  • B. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at time of application

The Paul Family Scholarship

This scholarship, sponsored by Newton Paul '97 & '99, Friends and Associates, is a tribute to his family (God, Andre Sr., Marie, Mozart, Andre Jr., and Marcus) for the love and support they provided him in obtaining his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, minor in International Studies, and Master's Degree in Human Services/Counseling. A student's leadership ability is one of the major criteria in the selection process. Qualified applicants will also:

  • A. Individuals with financial hardships
  • B. Be of freshman, sophomore or junior status during spring semester

Sophie Sarat Welling '34 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship award was established by Victoria Marsh to honor the memory of her mother, Sophie Sarat Welling '34. An alumna of the Campus School and the Oswego Normal School, Mrs. Welling broadened the horizons of her students through music education. As a student teacher, Mrs. Welling was the first educator at the Campus School to introduce her students to foreign languages and cultures through song. The scholarship recognizes and encourages the efforts of a music student at Oswego State. To qualify for this award, candidates must:

A. Be of junior status during the Spring semester

B. Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

C. Have exhibited that he/she is a person of integrity and good character

D. Be a music major or minor, or be actively involved in choral ensemble, music theater, and/or opera productions

Robert Brian Ellis Scholarship

The Robert Brian Ellis Memorial Scholarship, established by his parents, Robert and Victoria (Lewis) Ellis (both Oswego alumni, class of 1969), honors the memory of a boy whose young life was taken in an automobile accident. This award will be given to a student demonstrating high academic accomplishment in one of the following majors or in secondary education with a concentration in one of the following: mathematics, computer science, business administration, and/or economics.

To qualify for this award, a student must:

a. Be enrolled as a junior at the time of selection

b. Demonstrate outstanding achievement in major and/or concentration

c. Demonstrate a continuing commitment to the intellectual objectives of the particular discipline

R.E.A.C.H. Scholarship

The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. gave back to the college community in honor of the 2002 Return to OZ II Reunion. The first award was given for the 2007-2008 academic year. Selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by the R.E.A.C.H. Committee via the Oswego College Foundation.

To qualify for this award, a student must:

a. Be a sophomore or junior

b. Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.8

c. Submit an unofficial copy of his/her transcript

d. Submit a 250-word essay demonstrating how he/she has overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to succeed in higher education

OR

Submit a 250-word essay demonstrating how he/she has contributed to the diversity of the student

body in his/her major or a specific program/club he/she is involved with.

e. Preference will be given to students who meet the above criteria who plan to study abroad.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

  • Largest private scholarship for two-year community college transfer students in the country
  • The Foundation provides up to $30,000 per year to each of approximately 50 deserving students selected annually
  • Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student's educational expenses - including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees - for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.
  • The application deadline is typically February 1. Campuses set earlier internal deadlines for receiving applications to select their nominees.
  • To be eligible for the program, students must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their two-year institution. Students cannot apply directly to the Foundation. Each two-year college may nominate up to two students each year to be considered for the scholarship.

A review panel of distinguished university faculty and admissions professionals judges the nominees using criteria including academic achievement and critical thinking ability, financial need, will to succeed, and breadth of interest and activities.

  • An AICPA student affiliate member
  • A declared accounting, finance or information systems major with an overall and major GPA of at least 3.0
  • A student who has satisfactorily completed at least 30 semester hours (or equivalent), including at least six (6) semester hours in accounting
  • Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student (12 semester hours or equivalent), at an accredited college or university in the United States.

Award Amount: $5,000 per recipient for one year, minimum 10 recipients. The award is renewable for an additional year of study provided satisfactory scholastic progress is maintained. The award will be sent directly to the school for credit to the account of the student.

Eligibility Requirements: These awards are intended to encourage students with little or no previous accounting education to consider professional accounting careers.

  • I will have obtained a liberal arts or other non-business related undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States prior to enrolling in my graduate accounting program.
  • I did not earn more than 12 credits in accounting or business during my undergraduate program.

ACS awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry-related fields. Awards of up to $5,000 are given to qualified applicants based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.

If you are an African American, Hispanic, or American Indian high school senior or college freshman, sophomore, or junior pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology, you may be eligible.

To be considered for a scholarship through the ACS Scholars Program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
  • Be a full-time student at a high school or accredited college, university, or community college

A Microsoft scholarship provides a leg up so you can pursue studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women's Scholarships, Underrepresented Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

To be eligible:

  • Because the scholarship is merit based, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0.
  • You'll also need to apply for a summer internship and if offered an internship, you must complete the salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer an internship position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.)

Now in its 17th year, the program helps students who are pursuing careers in the healthcare, life sciences, or related fields manage the rising costs of education.

This year, we'll be awarding $250,000 in scholarships based on leadership qualities and academic performance, including ten $10,000 and thirty $5,000 grants.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Scholarships awarded to students pursuing healthcare-related education at an accredited institution.

New York Tuition Assistance Program

The New York Tuition Assistance Program is awarded to residents of New York who are full-time students at an approved postsecondary institution in New York. To be considered for this award, you must

  • Be charged at least $200 for tuition per year
  • Be in good academic standing
  • This award is based on financial need and type of postsecondary institution in which you are enrolled.
  • This award is renewable provided you meet certain criteria
  • Maintaining at least a cumulative "C" average after receipt of two annual payments.
