Registration Tips and Tricks

Looking for ways to make class searches and registration a little easier? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you out.

Check your Registration Status! Before registration begins log in to myOswego.  The Registration Tab has a link, "Check your Registration Status." It will tell you if you have any holds that will prevent registration, when you can register, your current major and minor, who your assigned advisor is and other useful bits of information. We suggest you do this a good week or two before registration opens so you have enough time to make any needed changes and register as soon as you can.

Class Search - Combine Search Criteria. You've got several search parameters - use them together to limit your results. Be careful, though - too restrictive of a search will give you no results.

Class Search - search Multiple select. Windows users can use the Ctrl and Shift keys in myOswego like they do in many other applications. Ctrl and click with mouse to select two non-adjoining items. Shift and click to select two items and everything in between.

Class Search - Use wildcards! In myOswego, the percent sign (%) is a wildcard. So if you want to find all 300 level courses, you can enter "3%" in the Course Number box. Or if you want a course with "medical" or "medicine," you might enter "%medic%" in the Title search box. Results will contain all course titles containing that string of characters. Here's an example for finding all 300-level English courses:

Class Search - search GenEd using the "Attribute Type" search box. Make sure you understand your GenEd requirements before searching. You can also search Attributes like "Upper Division" or "Hart Hall".

Class Search - use "Campus" to limit your results. You can limit to Main campus (daytime classes only), Metro Center, Distance Learning (online), etc. If you're living on campus, you probably don't want to get courses in Watertown in your results... Note: "Evening/Weekend Courses" start at 4:00 or later on weekedays, and are on the main campus only.

Class Search - tired of scrolling? You don't have to scroll through all Subjects to get to Zoology. Click the arrows to activate the scroll box, then type a letter to get there quicker. Works in any of the scroll boxes - Subject, Instructor, Attribute Type, etc.

Register - CRN direct entry. You've done your research. You know every class you want. When your registration time opens, you can enter the CRNs (Course Reference Numbers) in the boxes at the bottom of the Add / Drop page and "submit changes."

Register - "The Swap". You can drop one section while adding another at the same time. This is really useful if you need to change lab sections that are linked to a lecture. In Add/ Drop, select "Drop via Web" for the section you are dropping and also enter the CRN of the new section in the CRN box. "Submit Changes" and presto, no link errors or duplicate section errors. If the swap runs into errors, it will not commit the change.

Register - Re-add a dropped section. Dropped the wrong course?  No problem, just re-add by selecting the "Registered" drop-down option. This will work as long as you did not need special permission to get in the course the first time.
