OSWEGO -- Rennie Harris PureMovement dance troupe, which fuses hip-hop influences and urban culture with dance, will present a series of lectures, demonstrations and performances during its Artswego-sponsored residency at SUNY Oswego later this month.
Harris, an award-winning dancer and choreographer, will lead a hip-hop lecture and demonstration at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre. There is no admission charge, and the public is invited to this appearance, which will be held in conjunction with the African, Latino, Asian and Native American Student Leadership Conference on campus.
The same day, Harris will lead a hip-hop master class in dance at 2:30 p.m. in the Lee Hall third-floor dance studio. This class, for dancers at the intermediate to advanced level, is free for SUNY Oswego students and attendees of the ALANA conference, with others paying $15 to attend. The session is limited to 35 participants, with pre-registration required by calling Artswego at 312-4581.
As part of the ALANA conference, Harris will give a lecture, sponsored by the Black Student Union and Caribbean Student Association, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in Bell Auditorium, Room 213 of Hewitt Union. The talk is open to all free of charge. A dinner beforehand in The Forum is $16 for those not registered for the conference. Reservations can be made by calling 312-5420.
Rennie Harris PureMovement also will provide special programming for fifth-graders at Leighton Elementary School in Oswego. Students will participate in two workshops provided by Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell, director of the Ontondago Dance Institute, and have an opportunity to attend the lecture/demonstration at SUNY Oswego. Company members will then provide a master class at Leighton Elementary for the students.
Rennie Harris PureMovement will perform two full-length shows at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21. A ticket for the Sept. 20 show is included in ALANA conference registration. Tickets for the performances cost $20 for the general public; $17 for seniors, students and children; and $7 for SUNY Oswego students. For more information on the performances or to reserve a seat, call 312-2141 or e-mail
