SUNY-WIDE HONOR TO BE BESTOWED
ON OSWEGO ALUMNUS, TLC FOUNDER
OSWEGO -- Dr. Harold Morse, who graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1961 and went on to found two cable television networks, will be honored with the State University of New York's 2001 Distinguished Alumnus Award later this month. He will be the first Oswego graduate to receive this university-wide recognition.
Morse is to attend the SUNY Confederation of Alumni Association's award ceremony Sept. 22 during its annual conference in Binghamton.
Just two months ago, Morse picked up Oswego's Distinguished Alumnus Award at the Oswego Alumni Association’s reunion.
Morse founded The Learning Channel in 1980 and Ovation, a television network dedicated exclusively to the arts, in 1992.
He founded the Ovation network with J. Carter Brown and is now the network's president and chief executive officer. Morse is the driving force behind the idea to bring an all-arts network to television, much as he was in bringing an all-education cable network, The Learning Channel, to the marketplace in the early 1980s.
He served as TLC's chairman and CEO from 1980 until 1991. He also headed the American Community Service Network, a not-for-profit educational foundation and the parent corporation of TLC.
Under Morse's leadership, TLC became one of the nation's fastest growing basic cable networks, serving more than 18 million television households in North America by the end of his tenure.
He was a founding board member of Cable in the Classroom, a cable system-network joint initiative designed to provide programming for the nation's schools.
A member of the Oswego College Foundation board, he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees at SUNY Oswego. He earned his doctorate from the University of Washington.
This year's SUNY Confederation of Alumni Association conference, "SUNY -- Good for You, Good for Life," will examine alumni programs from the perspectives of campus presidents, alumni and development professionals, and alumni and special guest panelists.
