EDUCATION PROFESSOR TO RETURN
TO BENIN AS FULBRIGHT SPECIALIST

OSWEGO -- Dr. Alfred Frederick, professor of curriculum and instruction at SUNY Oswego, will spend winter break at the Universite d'Abomey-Calavi in Benin as a Fulbright senior specialist in education.

The new Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers two- to six-week grants to leading American academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world.

Frederick said his 40-day grant will allow him to conduct workshops for faculty at the West African university on curriculum design in a culturally pluralistic society, addressing both theoretical and practical perspectives. He is the author of the book "Curriculum and the Socio-cultural Context," published in Portuguese and English.

The Oswego professor also plans to encourage the effective implementation of the curriculum reform proposals that were the focus of his first two stays in Benin under the Fulbright Scholar Program. He coordinated a research team that produced an evaluation of the schooling process in Benin.

The team is now editing and translating its report into French, an official language in Benin, and Frederick said he hopes to deliver the French version to Benin's new minister of education in January.

The new Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is an alternative to the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program that offers academics and professionals support for shorter stays overseas to work at academic institutions, said Patti McGill Peterson, executive director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the organization that manages the Fulbright Scholar Program. Peterson was a vice president at SUNY Oswego in the late 1970s.
