PETER LEITCH SEXTET TO PLAY GUITAR-BASED JAZZ NOV. 16
OSWEGO -- The lyrical, guitar-based jazz of the Peter Leitch Sextet will come to Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, as part of the Artswego Performing Arts Series at SUNY Oswego.
A New York City-based guitarist and composer with 25 years of experience and 14 albums to his credit, Leitch presents what New York Times reviewer John S. Wilson termed "warm, singing lines . . . (with) both a melodic grace and a rhythmic strength."
Leonard Feather of the Los Angeles Times adds that the "fiery energy" and "lyrical romanticism" of Leitch's playing has him on his way to "becoming a major figure" on the jazz scene.
His work is featured in several recent encyclopedias of jazz music and has earned him a place in the DownBeat International Critics Poll several times. Leitch has toured North America, Europe and Australia with his own groups. His resume also includes playing with the likes of Ron Carter, Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson. Leitch was the musical director for "Guitars Play Mingus," a five-guitar with rhythm section ensemble performing the music of the late jazz composer Charles Mingus.
Leitch's visit to Oswego will include an admission-free informance at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in Room 41 of Tyler Hall. This informal session features an interactive question-and-answer component as well as the guitarist performing some of his material.
Visiting universities and passing on his knowledge are things Leitch said he considers an important part of his responsibilities. When he was honing his chops in his native Montreal in the early 1960s, he said, younger musicians tended to learn informally from older, experienced players in after-hour jams and through listening to live and recorded music.
"I was able to hear such giants as Coltrane, Wes Montgomery and (Thelonius) Monk live night after night when they came through town with their groups," Leitch recalled. "I could hear them develop their new ideas and then get the record that they made at the end of that particular tour and see where the music went."
The Peter Leitch Sextet will headline the college's Jazz Guitar Festival, taking place all day Nov. 16. The festival's workshops, clinics and performances include a 1 p.m. master class led by Leitch. Admission to the evening concert is included in festival registration costs. Details on the festival are available by calling 312-2301.
Tickets to the Peter Leitch Sextet's evening concert cost $12 for the general public, $10 for seniors or students, and $7 for SUNY Oswego students. A family package, featuring two adult and two student tickets, is available for $39. For information or reservations, contact Tyler Hall box office at 312-2141 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The performance is made possible by public funds provided by the Oswego County Legislature, as administered by Arts and Culture for Oswego County, and Hofner Guitar. WAER Jazz88 Radio and ClearChannel Radio, through its affiliate Y94 FM, provide media support.
