OSWEGO -- Children from the community, as well as college students, are invited to audition for the spring production of "The Secret Garden" by the SUNY Oswego theatre department.
Director Jonel Langenfeld-Rial, assistant professor of theatre at the college, said this show is "a fabulous opportunity" for children with an interest in acting to have a "fun, fulfilling experience" through a college musical theatre production.
"We are looking for three principal roles whose characters range from 10 to 12 years old," she said. "However, the actors themselves could be younger or older. Their look, acting and singing abilities are all important considerations in the casting process."
In addition, she plans to cast six to eight children or teens in a "youth movement chorus and ensemble," she said.
Children and teen auditions will be as follows: vocal auditions from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Tyler Hall lab theatre; cold readings and movement/dance auditions from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 3 in the lab theatre; callbacks, if necessary, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 4.
The director said the children will be asked to sing a memorized song from the show, read a bit from the script, do some improvisation work in a group as a game and perform a bit of dancing and movement.
There will be a separate round of auditions for college students: vocal auditions, 4:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre; cold readings, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 in Room 102 of Tyler Hall; movement and dance auditions, 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 22 in Tyler's Room 102; and callbacks from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 23.
"The Secret Garden" will have performances Feb. 27 and 28 and March 1, 7, 8 and 9 in Waterman Theatre.
