OSWEGO -- The public is invited to interact with members of SUNY Oswego's global community during an International Coffee Hour every Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 251 of Wilber Hall.
"We see this weekly event as a great opportunity for members of the campus and the community to be ambassadors and extend their hospitality to our international students," said Professor John Lalande, chair of Oswego's department of modern languages and literatures.
"We tell students they can either speak in English or in a foreign language," Lalande said. "Some visitors may have a chance to use a language they have learned but don't speak on a daily basis."
Even though the event takes place in a classroom, it is decorated and reconfigured in a coffeehouse-like fashion to project an informal environment, Lalande said. He added that some faculty members hold their office hours in conjunction with the coffee hour to encourage participation among students.
"It's a way for people to make students who are a long way from home feel welcome here," Lalande said. "At the same time, everybody can have a fun learning experience."
