OSWEGO -- The contemporary comedy "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" by "American Beauty" screenwriter Alan Ball will be directed by Oswego State senior Kerry Volkland in a unique collaboration with Oswego Players.
Because of renovations in Tyler Hall on campus, the Oswego State theatre department production will be presented at the Players' Frances Marion Brown Theatre at Fort Ontario Tuesday through Sunday, Nov. 14 to 19.
In the play, five bridesmaids, wearing the same ridiculous dress at a summertime wedding in Knoxville, Tenn., converge in the bedroom of the bride's younger sister.
They're hiding from the unseen bride, a disagreeable Southern belle; from aunts who want to marry them off; and from the handsome rake most of them have slept with. They come upstairs to pig out on pilfered wedding food, to swig Jack Daniels, to take a drag on a joint and to debate the merits of rigid Christianity in this extravagantly funny and raunchy comedy of manners.
Country music will support the play's setting in the South.
Volkland, a theatre and writing arts double major, will be making her directing debut.
"I love the show because it is female-dominated. It is contemporary and deals with serious issues of our time like sex, drugs and religion," Volkland said.
The young director said she also appreciates the small cast with no scene or costume changes.
The annual honors production is directed and designed by theatre students each year, usually in Tyler Hall's lab theatre.
"The stage is much larger at Oswego Players' theatre, plus it's a more intimate and comfortable atmosphere," Volkland said.
"Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" will preview Tuesday, Nov. 14, and run each night at 8 p.m. through Saturday, Nov. 18. A Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 will close the run.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $6 for Oswego State students. Seats are limited in the small 120-seat theatre and early ticket purchase is recommended. Major credit cards are accepted.
