SUNY OSWEGO MUSIC DEPARTMENT TO PRESENT FEAST OF CAROLS
OSWEGO -- The SUNY Oswego music department will present its annual Feast of Carols concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 103 W. Seventh St. in Oswego.
Performers at this audience-participation carol-sing and concert will include SUNY Oswego's Chamber Singers and College Choir, as well as the Oswego Festival Chorus, all directed by Dr. Julie Pretzat of SUNY Oswego. This year's special guest will be the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble, directed by Dr. James Spencer.
The Feast of Carols will include many holiday favorites and a few works that are new to the Oswego area, organizers said. The combined choirs and brass ensemble will perform Conrad Susa's "A Christmas Garland." Composed in 1985, this work combines traditional carols, sung by the choir and audience, with non-traditional settings and harmonizations.
Other selections will include three Renaissance-style pieces for brass and choir, as well as several carol settings. The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble will also present both standard and seasonal pieces including Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride," Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Henry V Suite" and a "Disney Spectacular."
In April, the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble and Oswego Festival Chorus collaborated for two performances of polychoral works of the Venetian Renaissance and early Baroque eras.
SU faculty and staff and other accomplished musicians from Central New York communities comprise the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble. The group's common denominator is the players' passion and talent for performing challenging, inspiring concert arrangements on the ensemble's more than 35 instruments, organizers said.
The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble won the "Open Division" Award at the North American Brass Band Association Competition in Washington, D.C., in April. The group's recent CD releases include "A Touch of Brass" and "Classic Brass."
Admission to the concert is free. The SUNY Oswego music department's honorary music fraternity, Mu Beta Psi, in conjunction with HSBC Bank, will accept donations to the New York Disaster Relief Fund.
Persons with disabilities, seeking accommodations to attend this event, should contact the music department at 312-2130 in advance.
