OSWEGO -- Planning is well under way for the Oswego State Fall Classic in support of scholarships at SUNY Oswego. Organizers have announced a fifth major sponsor for the 12th annual event, which will take place Sept. 13 and 14 on campus and in the community.
El Paso Corp. will join the other four Presidential Sponsors -- Enron, New York State Laborers' Employers Cooperation and Education Trust Fund, Sithe and Telergy -- in supporting the fund-raising effort.
"In past years, ANR Pipeline has played a major role in the Fall Classic as a Presidential Sponsor. This year, we are pleased to welcome El Paso to the Fall Classic as our newest Presidential Sponsor," said Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley. "Their support, along with that of all our loyal sponsors, will help provide the funding that brings the best and brightest students to Oswego."
The Fall Classic raises funds for Oswego's Presidential Scholars Program, providing scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic success. Last year 98 sponsors participated and produced a net of nearly a quarter million dollars in support of the program.
Begun in 1996, the Presidential Scholars program has resulted in more student applications and more highly qualified applicants. Last year, Oswego's first-year applications increased 7.3 percent above the year before, which was also up. Applicants' SAT scores are higher by 20 points since 1996, and Oswego is attracting more students with high school averages over 90.
The Sithe Luncheon on Sept. 13 will kick off two days of Fall Classic events. Friday recreational activities will offer opportunities for networking in a relaxed atmosphere at the fishing expedition on Lake Ontario, clay pigeon spectacular at Pathfinder Fish and Game Club, golf tournament at Oswego Country Club and Fall Classic finale barbecue.
The Fall Classic has generated gross receipts of over $2 million since 1990 through the support of sponsors, who choose from eight levels of support. Presidential Sponsors are the highest level of sponsorship.
