OSWEGO -- The SUNY Oswego music department, in collaboration with Artswego and the Student Association, will host a series of string workshops and performances March 10 to 13 with visiting conductor and performer Russell Guyver.
Guyver, who won an Emmy for scoring a PBS docudrama on the life of painter Sidney Lawrence, frequently appears as a conductor, soloist and chamber musician on three continents. The violist co-founded the String Orchestra of the Rockies in 1984 and has performed with the likes of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, English National Opera, Royal Ballet and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela. The native of England currently teaches at the University of Northern Colorado.
Guyver's schedule includes two local recitals where Juan Francisco La Manna of SUNY Oswego's music department will accompany the violist on piano. The recitals are slated for 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at All Saints Episcopal Church, South First and Academy streets in Fulton, and at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at the Church of the Resurrection, West Fifth and Cayuga streets in Oswego. The concerts will include selections from Bach, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Boccherini, Gershwin and Haydn.
Additionally, Guyver will perform at noon March 12 at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse.
Guyver will also lead a master class at 4 p.m. Monday, March 10, in Room 102 of Tyler Hall and provide individual lessons from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Room 4 of Tyler Hall.
He will lead string ensemble rehearsals, open to any interested college or community members, at 6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, March 10 and 12, both in Room 41 of Tyler Hall. Guyver also will conduct a pair of open rehearsals for the College-Community Orchestra at 6:30 p.m. March 11 and 6 p.m. March 13, both in Room 40 of Tyler Hall.
A similar program with Guyver was done two years ago "with great success," La Manna said. "Students at the college, as well as in the community, benefited from Dr. Guyver's expertise. The recital he performed was wonderful."
To register for the string ensemble rehearsal or individual lessons, or for more information, call La Manna at 312-2978.
