OSWEGO -- Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo will present the Artswego Performing Arts Series season finale at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre at SUNY Oswego.
The troupe draws on its native land's cultural diversity. The Times of London praises it for serving a "spicy, simmering stew of Brazil's African, Arabic and European influences." The group strives to present a style that embodies Brazil yet translates to audiences in any country.
"The company . . . has been well trained in both classical ballet and modern-dance techniques," Jack Anderson wrote in The New York Times. "It soon became clear that they were all highly skilled. Yet no single individual was featured for long as a soloist."
Artswego Coordinator Mary Avrakotos explained that the collaborative nature of the group is an important part of its appeal. "Even though every dancer has world-class ability, the troupe is even greater than the sum of its parts," Avrakotos said. "Grupo Corpo's overall artistic vision, energy and excellence has made it a wildly popular act all over the world."
In addition to the performance, Grupo Corpo's residency will feature lectures, demonstrations and master classes at the college and around the region, Avrakotos said. For more information on the master classes, call 312-4581 or e-mail
This tour of Grupo Corpo is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.
Tickets cost $20; $17 for seniors, students and children; and $7 for SUNY Oswego students. A special family package, featuring two adult and two student tickets, is available for $69.
For reservations, call the Tyler Hall box office at 312-2141 or e-mail
