OSWEGO -- The fusion of blues and strings will take center stage at SUNY Oswego's Waterman Theatre when Bob Walsh and the Allard String Quartet perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15, as part of the Artswego Performing Arts Series.
Walsh first combined his blues trio -- which includes Walsh on guitar and vocals, Guy Belanger on harmonica and Jean Cyr on standup bass -- with a string quartet in 1999. The Winnipeg Scene described the resulting recording as "superb," noting that "it immediately becomes obvious that veteran Quebec bluesman Bob Walsh's decision to record an album backed by a string quartet was neither unlikely nor unwise."
"Blues is just a ticket; it's just a name," Walsh told The Montreal Gazette. "It exists in other kinds of music if it comes from the heart, whether it's classical or country. There's as much soul in an Irish jig I sang as a kid as there is in what I'm doing now."
Billed as one of Quebec's best blues singers, Walsh has been playing various takes on the genre for more than 25 years. "I didn't pick the blues; it picked me," he told The Gazette. "There's a lot of pain, sorrow and sadness expressed."
Walsh's aim to expand the language of the blues can be seen in his inclusion of Buffalo Springfield's folk-rock "For What It's Worth," the popular ballad "You Are So Beautiful" and the soul standard "Georgia (On My Mind)" on his disc. He continues to fervently spread the message, The Gazette noted, playing about 200 shows a year around the world on stages ranging from nightclubs to the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
The appearance of Bob Walsh and the Allard String Quartet is made possible with support from the Student Association Program Board. Tickets are $10 to $12 for general admission, $8 for seniors and students, and $6 for SUNY Oswego students. For information or reservations, call the Tyler Hall box office at 312-2141 or e-mail
The concert is complemented by an Art Auction and Reception, also on Friday, March 15, in Tyler Art Gallery. There is no admission fee for the auction, which supports scholarships through SUNY Oswego's art department. A 5 p.m. art viewing and 5:30 p.m. live auction precede the 8 p.m. curtain time for Bob Walsh and the Allard String Quartet.
