OSWEGO -- There's a new spark of energy in the Oswego State Fall Classic, thanks to GE Power Systems, which recently came aboard as a Presidential Sponsor, contributing to the dramatic resurgence of the Fall Classic.
The annual event, which funds Presidential Scholarships for top students at SUNY Oswego, was dealt a blow last year with the bankruptcies of two major sponsors, Enron and Telergy. Its future seemed dark.
Now, GE Power Systems and Constellation Energy Group have stepped up as new leading sponsors this year. Constellation announced its higher level of support last month. With these two sponsors joining Sithe and New York State Laborers' Employers Cooperation and Education Trust Fund at the highest sponsorship level, the event and the scholarships that it supports are as strong as ever.
"We are thrilled that GE Power Systems and Constellation have joined the family of Fall Classic sponsors at the highest level this year," SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley said, "and we are grateful to Sithe and LECET for their continuing support of the Classic and the Presidential Scholars Program over the past several years."
Said GE's John Stephens, "GE Power Systems is proud to be a sponsor of the Oswego State Fall Classic. Our support of the Presidential Scholars Program is an indication of our belief in the quality public education Oswego provides, and our commitment to supporting our local community and its institutions." Stephens is manager of global development and strategic initiatives, energy products.
The Fall Classic will take place Sept. 12 and 13 this year. It has generated gross receipts of over $2 million since 1990 through the support of sponsors, who choose from eight levels of support. Presidential Sponsors support the Fall Classic at the leadership level.
