OSWEGO -- SUNY Oswego journalism student Corinne Heller has won a first-place award for Region 1 in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards for college journalists.
A story she wrote for Reuters during her summer internship in Israel won in the category of newspaper general news reporting. The story was about the Israeli army's report of finding a Hamas bomb-making video.
The awards were presented at the SPJ Region 1 conference in Port Jefferson. Second and third place for Region 1 went to students from Ithaca College and Syracuse University, respectively.
Heller is editor in chief of The Oswegonian. Linda Loomis, director of Oswego's journalism program, said that Heller plans another news writing internship in Israel this summer.
