AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER, ALUMNUS TO HOST CAMPUS WORKSHOP MAY 1
OSWEGO -- SUNY Oswego graduate Jef Billings -- who designed the costumes for 2002 Olympic gold-medal figure skater Sarah Hughes, as well as for many other performers -- will host a costume design workshop at his alma mater on Thursday, May 1.
The public is invited to the admission-free workshop, which will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 102 of Tyler Hall.
Billings' visit also coincides with SUNY Oswego's 44th annual high school drama festival, an event that marked the designer's first introduction to the college's program, said Mark Cole, professor and chair of theatre. As part of the festival, Billings will present a special workshop for participating students on May 2.
"We're thrilled to welcome Jef back to campus," Cole said. "Jef has returned several times over the years to visit classes and present workshops to our students. His talent and artistry as a designer are always an inspiration to the theatre majors."
An Emmy-winning costume designer who has created outfits for the likes of Cher, Carol Burnett and Sandy Duncan, Billings has also fashioned creations for some of the top names in ice skating -- Scott Hamilton, Michelle Kwan, Katarina Witt and Kristi Yamaguchi. At the 2002 Winter Olympics, Hughes earned her gold performing in costumes Billings created.
"Currently he is the costume designer for Stars on Ice, now touring Canada," Cole noted.
Billings earned a bachelor's degree in speech and theatre from Oswego in 1971 and was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1982.
