Services to Students with Disabilities Committee
Minutes for October 27, 2006

Present:  Roberta Schnorr, Harry Shock, Starr Knapp, Larry Mayo, Jim Russell, Chris Hebblethwaite, Michael Reagan, Karen Wolford

Minutes recorder: Karen Wolford

The minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and there were no changes.

I.                   Announcements:

Bobbi asked if the committee agreed with the focus of last meeting as a guideline for what the committee would focus on in the year ahead: Web based faculty guide, Physical accessibility, Perspectives of students, and the exploration of a Disability Studies certificate. All agreed to this plan.  The agenda followed these areas with a 10 minute discussion and then plans for further action.

Starr brought up that the Provost’s office has ask her to be involved in coordinating an online training session that will be set up for the college on Universal Design. She will give us more information.

II.                Web Based Faculty Guide:

Michael has the web pages and links done and they just need to be uploaded. Harry brought up that we need to add accessibility issues.  Michael went to training on accessibility issue by Drew Hill and will include what he learned.  The website materials can be uploaded through Cindy Jackson.  Bobbi will contact her about whether Michael can have access or if she will upload.  Larry has a resource on accessibility which is the expert through SLN and he will give the name to Bobbi as an additional resource.  Bobbi asked Michael to show her the site when it is done so she can review it.  It may be uploaded by next week or by the next meeting.

III.             Physical Accessibility:

Larry has the survey on his hard drive and will send it to Deborah.  It will be a good start on the survey project.  Starr has the student survey on disk and also the raw data. Chris will summarize the data on excel after he receives it.  Then the group working on this can see where to go after that.

Also it was noted that the EAST DOORS OF SHELDON--those near the ACCESSIBLE PARKING PLACES are still NOT INSTALLED. It is VERY difficult to open the old east doors of Sheldon for anyone, but particularly for individuals who are using crutches or other aides due to mobility issues.

IV.              Perspectives of Students:

Melissa has offered to  be a resource for any students who use accommodation--particularly those who are new to the process or concerned about self identifying.  Starr hopes to use the college hour for drop in sessions and peer to peer contact.  She hopes to start this in Fall of 2008 if not sooner.  Mike, Harry, Chris, Amanda and Melissa will all be involved in this subgroup and they will ask Deborah Curry if she plans to remain involved.

V.                 Disability Studies:

Karen and Larry reviewed some material from W. Virginia on a Disability Studies program but it was narrow and discipline specific.  They will meet soon to go over the guidelines for Disability Studies from the national organization.  Karen will remind Bobbi to send her the link on the National Organization if she can’t find the guidelines.

The next meeting will be Friday, Nov 17th  and Chris will schedule an internet room in the library if possible so that we can access the new web based faculty guide.
