Campus Environment Advisory Committee
Minutes for March 6, 2007

In Attendance: Claire W. Putala, chair.  Frank Byrne, R. Mark Cole, Andy Nelson, Gurdeep Skolnik

Overall, the campus’s role as a microcosm of global climatic changes and pressures was the central theme of the meeting with the following specifics discussed.

I.          Our possible role in an Earth Day clean up was raised with Gurdeep offering to make contacts. Other possibiLities to raise awareness of CEAC were also discussed such as contacting the Public Affairs Office, raising consciousness of campus recycIh~g which seems to have fallen off, and the possibilities of strategic tree planting — with the over all issue of campus planning also raised as was the status of the planning of the Quad which was said to be now under discussion with the Campus Concept Committee.

II.        The topic of the tentatively planned walkway. the subject of the last meeting, was raised after Claire showed a few slides which followed the proposed walkway. Several suggestions were made regarding some means for making it an actuality: writing grants, contacting ORSP, the DEC. writing a rationale in terms of its functions. and benefits (especially at a time when the case for the positive presence of the lake could be useful ).

III.       The topic of the yearly algae bloom on the lake was raised with Andy providing an outline of its life cycle which involved the presence of the mussels cleaning up the lake, providing sunlight which in turn supported the growth of the algae. Frank asked if global warming was making the matter worse and Andy responded in thc affirmative.

IV.       R. Mark Cole spoke of the national issue of obesity and the benefits a lake walkway could supply in offering a means for exercise for both mind and body. There was concurrence!

V.        Andy was asked about the sratus oi the study of the science buildings as Jerry had suggested CEAC might be able to play a pan in thinking about the outdoor areas surrounding the buildings. Andy said the architects would be offering three different scenarios. The matter of the eventual fate of Snygg was raised as was that of Hewitt Union. We will wait and find out. And that will include the Late of the Quad, as well, as Frank noted. They have our good stuff and we hope for the best.

VI.       Lastly, Claire wondered about the state of the parking lot behind the Library and the area that had becn shrubs now cleared — for planting or parking?

Respectfully submitted,
