Library Visioning
Examples of Ideas Received during the Library Visioning Process

1)  Create a variety of study and group meeting areas, including group study areas to accommodate small and medium-sized groups, large group study areas (attractive, inviting, comfortably furnished), quiet areas for individual study, computer labs and stations throughout, “classy” reading room for meeting/study space, small group study rooms at entrance to café to allow group scheduling in proximity to food service.

2)  Create centers for skills development, such as faculty/ staff development center including activities for learning about pedagogy, scholarship work, software applications; student and faculty writing center; workspace for faculty and staff; tutoring areas; seminar/conference rooms, electronic classroom(s) with seating for 40+.

3)  Consolidate service areas (circulation/reserves, interlibrary loan, reference, periodicals/media, technical help) and make them easily available near entrance, on kiosks, and with some service on 3rd floor.

4)  Create a center for academic support, such as “information commons” concept with reference and technical staff; printing, copying, scanning, faxing services; viewing/ listening spaces for media, high-tech presentation practice room(s) for students, and a multimedia production center.

5)  Make improvements for maintaining collections in open stacks and basement storage.

6)  Make the library inviting and inspiring by painting and adding new colors, comfortable furniture, nice rugs, new shelving or new ends for shelving, preservation-friendly storage space, visible Special Collections, displays and art, plants and better lighting, attractive entrance from outside and inviting lobby.

7)  Make the library ADA accessible by renovating restrooms and study rooms on main floor; handicapped-accessible parking near building and handicapped-accessible shelving throughout building; improved elevators; ADA accessible collections.

8)  Improve access to the building by having parking for quick visits to library, drive-up outdoor book drop, connectors to Lanigan and Campus Center complex, improved lake-side entrance.

9)  Make staff areas more efficient and attractive with pleasant, well-lighted (natural lighting if possible), attractive work areas, staff conferencing area; comfortable staff lounge.
